I like to shop. I’m the worst when it comes to going in a store and intending to come out with one little thing that I need and ending up with ten things that could really come in handy one day… but probably not. But I also like to purchase gifts for those random occasions that come up, like a birthday you find out about the night before, or a last-minute get-together to celebrate someone’s new job… and of course Christmas! Anytime I can find creative gifts for my family and friends, I take that opportunity.
That’s why this weekend I attended the Marketplace, an annual shopping extravaganza at the Classic Center put together by the Junior League of Athens. Every year the Marketplace hosts local vendors of clothes, food, skin care, arts and crafts as well as larger businesses who want to reach the Athens market on a more personal level. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn what is available right here in town without ordering online or driving all over the place… and also there’s a wine tasting!
While I was walking the aisles I found a booth filled with soap and shampoo made with beer, something I didn’t think would smell or do its job like bath products should, but after taking my purchases home and trying them out, they surprised me! Beer is apparently really healthy for the hair and skin. Hops are also used for a delicious-smelling lip balm. The vendor uses Fair Trade-certified shea butter that is hand-rendered and 100% chemical free among other ingredients to create all-natural skin care that is healthy and safe. I can only imagine how amazing these products would be if they were made with ORGANIC beer like Peak! Then they would truly be chemical-free.
After I saw this company I started looking around online for other companies that create products with beer, and I found that it’s actually a very popular practice! The Beer Soap Company makes all kinds of soap you can imagine, from all breweries, including porters, fruit beers, lagers, and seasonals!
Etsy has TONS of beer soaps available. I found Kona Pipeline Porter, Landshark, Shock Top, Kona Fire Rock, Bud Light, Budweiser, and Gordon Biersch Czech style Pilsner! Widmer Hefeweizen and Wild Blue have been transformed into beer soap as well! It makes me so happy to know that I can find all of the delicious craft beers we distribute here at Leon Farmer and Company in other forms!
I also came across a great site that provides directions for making your OWN beer soap! This could come in handy if you’re a homebrewer and would like to share your brews with everyone in a non-drinking form.
Random side note… After writing this blog and researching these beer soaps, I’m now the proud owner of 5 different beer soap bars that will arrive in 7-10 business days.
