Like most alumni fresh out of college, I’m poor. Thus I watch all of Saturday’s football games from a couch on the front lawn of the fraternity house where I reigned as a Sweetheart during my undergrad at Georgia. It’s really a nice set-up for 50 people and a big screen TV… as long as there are tents and large speakers. We grill out on the side deck, reminisce about the tailgating days of yore and bark at South Carolina fans in their Garnet and Black outfits as they walk down Milledge Avenue on their way to campus. Red and Black looks so much better!
My sorority sisters and I come prepared with extra food and drink for our day in the sun (you never know how much will be available after those frat boys dig in) as well as a cooler full of Yuengling Lager, Yuengling Light Lager, and Bud Ice… and of course at least five digital cameras so we can document our time together. Football season is the one reason many fraternity and sorority alumni return to Athens each year, and we make the most of it. It’s like a reunion for our family away from home.
This weekend we did it up even bigger with our tailgate to ring in the season’s home opener against South Carolina. It couldn’t have been more exciting! Both teams had fairly sad defenses… but the result was the highest-scoring border bash in over 30 years. Fellow tailgaters were on their toes the whole time as the points rose higher and higher until that final minute. Everyone says it would be great if we could just run over the Gamecocks for a change, but to be honest I think it would take the fun out of our rivalry to beat them that badly. 41-37 is perfect.
Growing up in Augusta, I experienced a lot of the USC/UGA rivalry without ever watching a game. The city sort of straddles the two states on either side of the Savannah River (North Augusta is in SC), and every year since 1993, on the night before the Great Southern rivalry, Border Bash takes place downtown at the Augusta Commons. Border Bash provides safe, family-friendly pre-game fun for all the fans who attend. Cheerleaders and mascots Cocky and Hairy Dawg attend the event as well, which raises money for various children’s charities in the CSRA through admission tickets, vendors and games. Well over 12,000 people attend and it’s crazy good times for all. This year, the 16th annual Border Bash was sponsored in part by Budweiser and Yuengling!
