(Earlier this week I received an inquiry from a customer about Redbridge, a gluten-free beer that we distribute. She piqued my interest in learning more about gluten-free beer and its health benefits, so I asked a friend who is a gluten-free expert to share her knowledge with our faithful readers! Below is her reponse. I did some Google research on my own and have included my layman’s notes in italics :-)
Hi! I’m Erin Bransford, and I am your gluten-free guru offering guidance and advice to navigate the world of going gluten-free. Read my blog to learn about other gluten-free products and recipes!
When the gluten free community finds something it loves, we also love to let others know about it, so I had to share my latest find: Redbridge beer. I love sharing my finds because those who struggle with Celiac Disease are always looking for something new and delicious that they can enjoy. Celiac is an auto-immune disease which causes a toxic reaction to gluten, the sticky protein found in many grains. (This reaction interferes with food absorption and can cause many other health conditions, and without treatment can destroy the small intestine!) Currently the only cure is to follow a strictly gluten-free diet, which unfortunately includes beer brewed with wheat, rye or barley (that’s most beer!).
It’s not easy to always have to say “no” to a cold beer on a warm night, but when it comes to gluten-free beers like Redbridge, you don’t have to! Redbridge is made with sorghum, an old-world grain without any gluten. It’s still got a nice hoppy flavor but none of the wheat or barley found in other beers that can be harmful to those with Celiac. Redbridge has partnered with the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness to help increase understanding of this disease, which affects approximately 3.2 million people in the United States today. I can’t think of a better way to increase your appreciation for this healthy and flavorful beer than sampling it at your next gathering!
