I CAN Bake!

I mentioned a while back that I was going to attempt beer bread. Now I’m not much of a baker, (though I can cook with the best!) so I never really got around to it… until this past weekend. Sorry for the delay! But it was well worth the wait.

While shopping for goodie bag fillers at my local supercenter, I came across this single oversized brown glass bottle hiding behind the Budweiser BBQ sauce and sausage samplers, with a shiny green bottle opener hanging from its cap and a cheery label that read “Cheese Beer Bread Mix.” Eh?

Eventually I found the box of them, just a few lonely bottles chilling at the bottom of the shelf on the end of the rack. I couldn’t locate any other flavors, but the directions on this one seemed easy enough: Add 1 bottle of beer to the mix and stir. Pour into a pan and bake. I couldn’t resist! It was too easy a recipe not to take home and at least try. Way easier than homemade beer bread, which was my original plan. So I bought myself a bottle and took it home.

The hardest part in making the bread was choosing what beer to use. I mean, obviously I want to keep my favorite beers, so it had to be something I wouldn’t mind not getting to drink. I couldn’t choose between my Gordon Biersch Winterbock, my Redhook ESB, my Kona Pipeline, or any of the others in my very random assortment of brews… so I took a beer from my roommate’s side of the fridge. She’ll never miss it.

I mixed the batter and the beer, stirred (with a wooden spoon! I’m told it stirs better?), and poured it into a 5″ × 9″ loaf pan, which I put in the oven for about 45 minutes at 375 degrees. When it came out it smelled so good I pulled a piece off the top and promptly burned my finger. But it tasted divine. I did the toothpick test you’re always supposed to do when you bake, confirming that it was done, then I waited about ten minutes for the bread loaf to cool. When it was ready I slice and served it to my roommate and neighbors, who pretty much devoured it. I went back to the store the next day and bought some more! It’s very exciting to know that I can bake without ruining something as long as it only has two ingredients. I wonder why I can’t successfully make those cookies you just dump out of the package onto the pan… at any rate, if you’re looking for a creative dish to bring to the next holiday potluck, or you just want to try something new in the kitchen, give beer bread a shot!
