Sweets for the Sweet

image

When I was working on the newsletter last week, I had no idea there were so many desserts that could be made with beer. I mean, I know I’ve been advocating beer floats for months, but did you know that you could make cupcakes? Ice cream? Souffle? There just wasn’t room on the newsletter for all of them, so here are some of the recipes I discovered that use beer as a primary ingredient.

Southern Tier makes a variety of amazing beers, many of which are perfect for dessert dining. At the beginning of the year a blogger posted a recipe for Choklat cheesecake, which I shared on our website. I’ve yet to try it but it is definitely on my list when Choklat returns to Georgia! The same blogger has recipes for Mokah Souffle, which you can try NOW because Mokah is in season, and Pumking pumpkin bread, which will be available in a few months. In general, this blogger’s recipes just look so good… I think everyone should pick their favorite Southern Tier brews, or any brew, and attempt to master a few dishes!

Featured in the newsletter, peach ice cream is homemade with Magic Hat’s IPA on Tour, Blind Faith. It uses real peaches! The Beer Cook blogger from above also makes an ice cream using yet another Southern Tier treatCreme Brulee!

Chocolate cake is good no matter what your tastes, but Lazy Magnolia Jefferson Stout adds a whole new level of flavor to this traditional recipe. Homemade from start to finish, including the icing, this cake calls for all the usual ingredients in a homemade cake, along with a bottle of that sweet sweet potato stout and some freshly brewed strong coffee.

Along the same lines as the cake are Jefferson Stout cupcakes. Made with similar ingredients, this recipe yields 24 delicious dark chocolate cupcakes you can top with your own store-bought frosting or the icing used for the cake!

Yuengling Black and Tan is a useful beer for making chilled Italian Trifle. The recipe takes traditional ladyfingers and dips them in a delectable espresso/Black & Tan sauce. Cream cheese and almonds fluff the top for a beautiful dish to serve and enjoy.

For those homebrewers, you can recycle your spent grains into peanut butter chocolate chip cookies! Here is the recipe. Once you make them, bring me some to try!
