With almost 100 bars in downtown alone, and thousands of beers consumed each week by residents and students, college town Athens is a prime candidate for a bottle and can recycling program. Jose Cortes, marketing coordinator for Leon Farmer & Co., recognized the possibilities and has been working with the Athens-Clarke County Recycling Division for the last few months. Together they organized a bar crawl geared towards educating bar patrons about recycling and making it easy to do so while enjoying themselves downtown.
This past Thursday night, Leon Farmer & Co., ACC Recycling Division, and Greeks Go Green teamed up and put on the first annual Recycling Bar Crawl. “Bin There, Done That” t-shirts were available for purchase, and those wearing the shirt received discounts at participating bars in the downtown area. The program drew about 250 participants and served to get the word out that recycling downtown is an easy alternative to creating more waste by throwing bottles and cans in designated recycling bins instead of trash cans.
