Santa Claus is known in America these days as the big man in red who brings presents to children every Christmas in a sleigh pulled by eight flying reindeer. This image of him came from author Clement C. Moore, who wrote the original Christmas story “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” (now we call it “The Night Before Christmas”) in 1823. Long before Moore however, Saint Nicholas, a real man born in Turkey in the fourth century, was known as the Patron Saint of Brewers.
