The Athens Banner-Herald reported this morning that WatchDawgs, a UGA student organization offering free rides home to students, is once again providing its services starting tonight, after shutting down this past February due to lack of headquarters.
Now called Designated Dawgs to better explain its purpose, the organization provides a safe, reliable, and free ride home to students and their friends at night. Since 2001 “DD” has provided safe rides to almost 60,000 students.
The organization previously worked out of a donated apartment at a complex in Athens, but lost the space when the complex was brought under new management. This fall they have been offered use of the office of Student Affairs on campus, but this will not provide the availability and space necessary to run the program effectively – so they are still in search of an office or apartment to store records and equipment, feed volunteers and run their operation each week.
Designated Dawgs’ purpose is the same as that of Zingo, a paid driving service geared to getting people home safely. Zingo operates with the use of a tiny, foldable motorbike. The Zingo driver drives the motorbike to a caller’s vehicle, then folds it up and puts it in trunk. The Zingo rep drives his clients home in their own vehicle, and once there unfolds his little scooter to return to headquarters. The goal is to return people safely to their home along with their vehicle, so they don’t worry about leaving it somewhere overnight or worse, drive it home when they shouldn’t.
